Dear Mr. Kane:

Narcotics Anonymous of Hawaii wishes to offer the Hawaii State Library System a donation of books.  We wish to add to the system a book published by Narcotics Anonymous entitled "It Works: How and Why".  To accomplish this, we are offer to donate a copy for each library in the system, up to a total of 48 books.  

"It Works: How and Why" was published in 1993 as a companion to our first book called "Narcotics Anonymous", published in 1983.  This book called "Narcotics Anonymous", commonly referred to as our "Basic Text", and explains many aspects of our program; the disease of addiction, our collective personal experiences with recovery and the principals our Fellowship.  "It Works: How and Why" was written to focus specifically on the Twelve Steps and the Twelve Traditions of Narcotics Anonymous, the foundation of our recovery from active drug addiction.

In addition, we wish to offer a donation of a set of audiotapes of our "Basic Text" for the Blind and Handicapped Library.  

For your information, Narcotics Anonymous is an international community-based fellowship of men and women for whom drugs had become a major problem.  We are recovering addicts who hold regularly scheduled meetings to help each other live drug-free lives.  We feel that our approach to the problem of addiction is completely realistic, because the therapeutic value of one addict helping another is without parallel. We feel that our way is practical, for one addict can best understand and help another addict.

Narcotics Anonymous has been in Hawaii since 1972.  We currently have over 100 meetings a week throughout the Hawaiian Islands. We are a non-profit organization, self-supporting through our own contributions. Therefore we charge no dues or fees for membership or service.

The word "Narcotics" in our name does not only apply to opium like drugs. It is used as a general term that applies to any drug or chemical that is used to change our feelings, mood, or "get high." Our program is focused on addiction and recovery, not on any specific drug.
